Willa Mae and Susan moved into Copperfield Hill separately and have formed a friendship that has been a blessing to each of them.
Willa Mae moved into Copperfield Hill in September of 2020 from Missouri. Her only daughter and family live within walking distance of Copperfield Hill. Willa Mae was familiar with our community as her son-in-law’s mother previously lived at Copperfield Hill. Susan moved to Minnesota in 2021 from Missouri to be near her daughter. She first moved into a market-rate apartment. The lack of community, socialization, and transportation led to isolation and loneliness. Susan made a transition to Copperfield Hill in December of 2022.
The two can vividly remember the first day they met. Willa Mae was wearing her Missouri sweatshirt to the New Resident Orientation to assist with acclimating new residents. Susan walked up to Willa Mae to ask about her sweatshirt. They quickly learned they both moved to Minnesota from Missouri and had everything in common down to their favorite color. The two of them are seen doing all the activities together. If one is missing, the other will ensure they are okay. They both attend church with Willa Mae’s family and share dinner daily in each other’s apartment.
They both enjoy the sense of community and “family” that Copperfield Hill provides. The spacious one-bedroom apartment has enough light to keep Susan’s ten-year-old orchid alive. “I walk into my apartment and feel at home,” says Susan. The companionship and the gift of friendship are more than they ever fathomed for their lives. “My friendship with Willa Mae has brought me joy and filled many holes in my life,” says Susan.

“Copperfield Hill is a great place. I enjoy the design of the building with the open atrium in the middle of everything. I look forward to visiting my friends and neighbors at different events and meals. On not-so-nice days, I’m not required to go anywhere. I can attend a meal or get a haircut all under one roof.”
